My Origin Story
Hi, I'm Josh Maurer, the owner and creative force behind Maurer Media.
My journey to becoming a professional photographer and videographer started with a simple click: a film camera from a '90s Happy Meal. That early fascination evolved with my first digital camera (a Minolta) and a deep love for landscape photography, from the old-growth forests of Vancouver Island to the stunning beaches of the Okanagan. This passion grew as I saw my photos being shared and used by others, a small confidence boost that solidified my love for capturing unique perspectives.
While I initially pursued a career in 3D game animation, I found myself drawn to the power of lighting and visual storytelling to create mood and narrative. After 16 years as a professional chef, my two passions came together. My friend and rugby mentor, a local realtor named Chris Marte, gave me a chance to photograph one of his listings. It was a pivotal moment. I realized I could use my eye for detail and perspective to help improve real estate listings.
This led me to work for a local company to create property visuals. It was there that I had the great fortune of meeting Darryl Reuter, a local gem and real estate legend. When that company's photography division closed, Darryl's belief in the value of quality photos meant we continued to work together. This relationship gave me the confidence to take what I learned and apply it using my own gear and expertise.
That same passion now extends from real estate to the rink and the field. I first picked up a camera at the arena to help cover my son's hockey fees, but I quickly fell in love with capturing the action and telling the stories of local athletes. Being a recognized photographer in our community's arenas is an incredible feeling, and I’m driven by the opportunity to create powerful, lasting visuals that have a positive impact on an athlete's career.
Sports Photography Usage License
All photos are provided with a specific usage license, as outlined below. The copyright for all images remains with Maurer Media.
1. Personal Use License (For Athletes & Parents)
Photos purchased by individual athletes or their families are licensed for Personal Use only. This is a permanent, non-exclusive license granting the right to:
Share the images on personal social media accounts, websites, and blogs.
Create prints for personal display for yourself, family, and friends.
Use in non-commercial portfolios for college or team recruitment.
This license does not permit commercial use, sale, or transfer of the image to third parties (such as sponsors, businesses, or media outlets) without express written permission and a separate commercial license.
2. Commercial License (For Teams, Leagues & Organizations)
For teams, leagues, and organizations, a Commercial License is provided. Unless otherwise specified in our agreement, this license is:
Limited & Non-Exclusive: Valid for the client organization for the duration of the current season (e.g., the 2025-2026 hockey season).
Purpose-Bound: Grants the right to use the images for marketing and promoting the team/organization across official websites, social media channels, and standard promotional materials (e.g., game-day programs, non-merchandise posters).
Once the season concludes, the standard license expires. For use in subsequent seasons, on merchandise (apparel, etc.), or in major advertising campaigns, an extended or perpetual license is required.
3. Editorial License (For Media Outlets)
Accredited media outlets are provided with a limited Editorial License.
This grants the right to use the images solely for news reporting purposes related to the specific game or event covered.
Images must not be used for commercial, advertorial, or "sponsored content" purposes.
A photo credit to "Maurer Media" is mandatory for all published images.
General Terms
The copyright for all images remains with Maurer Media. Photos may not be sold, significantly altered (beyond basic cropping), or transferred to third parties without a new licensing agreement.
For any usage not covered here, or if a different team, sponsor, or media outlet requires the photos, a new licensing agreement is required. Please contact me directly to discuss your needs.
